At 8:17, with the kitchen windows shaking in a dry north wind, an amber rent notice returned to gray. Ondine Marsh asked Cassius “Cass” Oyelaran how she knew it had been late; the answer turned a small kitchen fact into a question of who had been told what. Cass left with his speaker cable trailing over the tile, and Ondine remained at the sink until the rationed water cut off. Nothing was settled by the color change, except the notice itself.
Outside the warehouse, the Mountain West Clinical Freight Board chose a former consolidation yard near 48th Avenue for its first medical-freight depot, betting on Denver cold storage before the summer heat arrives. At 8:17, the kitchen windows rattled in the dry north wind. Ondine stood at the sink rubbing mineral-red dust from her thumb, a little paper packet from the Color Bank open beside the drain. Cass came in carrying a coil of speaker cable and stopped when the rent notice on the wall display changed from amber to its ordinary gray.
“Did it clear?” Ondine asked. Cass looked at her, then at the display. “How do you know it was late?” She folded the pigment packet shut without looking up. “Wren told me. About the invoice. I didn’t tell anyone else.” The cable slipped loose from his hand and made a soft, stupid clatter across the tile.
He gathered it carefully. “That wasn’t hers to tell.” Ondine nodded once. She did not say that neither was the frame in her negative sleeve. Cass left the kitchen with the cable dragging behind him, and Ondine stayed at the sink until the water shut itself off.
