Wren asks Ondine to see the old signs without a camera
A small exhibition of salvaged hand-painted signs opens in Union Station’s former luggage room: diners, motels, repair shops and theaters, their lettering chipped and often anonymous rather than tidily certified. In the warehouse laundry room, Wren Abadi brings Ondine Marsh the notice and asks her to come Saturday without her camera. Ondine agrees to leave it home, while making clear that restraint is not the same thing as welcome. The paper remains on the dead dryer between them.
Elsewhere in the rail district, tenants ask the reassessment office to count long-maintained leases and tenant-paid repairs when new valuations set pass-through costs. The office offers only that documented investment may be considered; owners are already circulating tougher renewal language. It is the kind of answer that leaves a block waiting to learn what its work has been worth.
At the house, Teodor “Teo” Vance makes Held Through the Listening, a welded steel-and-salvage structure that leaves its carrying joints exposed, including a bolted repair that refuses the appearance of permanence. The work follows the shifting balance of Cass’s earlier sound piece: what happens when weight arrives and a structure has to answer it.
Wren makes Load-Bearing Study, oil paintings of working hands, supports, and revision itself. Also moved by that encounter with Teo’s work, she paints maintenance at the moment it becomes structural change, letting the evidence remain visible rather than smoothing the figure into certainty.
From the worldRail District Tenants Ask the Reassessment Office to Count Leases as More Than Occupancy

A coalition of rail-district tenants submitted a correction request arguing that long, self-maintained commercial leases should be recognized when revised valuations are used to set pass-through costs. Their evidence was mostly unglamorous: roof repairs, wiring invoices, years of improvements owners had not paid for.
The reassessment office said it could consider documented leasehold investment but could not promise that it would restrain any owner’s interim charges before final rolls. Several small landlords have already begun circulating revised renewal language.

From the worldUnion Station Opens a Small Exhibition of Hand-Painted Signs From the Old Interior West

cultural · denver · magnitude 0.22
A former luggage room at Union Station opened a free spring exhibition of salvaged hand-painted signs from closed diners, motels, repair shops and neighborhood theaters across Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. The lettering is chipped, sun-faded and largely anonymous; the curators left several panels unattributed rather than manufacture a clean provenance.
The show is drawing people between trains in slow clusters, especially around a six-foot motel sign from the San Luis Valley whose painted clouds are more persuasive than the scenery feed behind the ticket hall.

At 4:20, the laundry room smelled of hot metal and somebody’s citrus detergent. Ondine stood at the sink working a crescent of red oil paint out of the cuff of her overshirt with a nail brush. Wren came in carrying the folded Union Station exhibition notice she had torn from the kitchen feed-printer.
“You’d like these,” Wren said. “The signs.” She set the notice on top of the dead dryer. “Saturday. Come with me. Don’t bring your camera.”
Ondine kept brushing the cuff until the water ran pink, then clear. “I’ll leave it home, but don’t call that the same as letting me come with you.” Wren looked at the old lettering in the notice—DINER, MOTOR COURT, RADIO REPAIR—without touching it. “I know,” she said. Ondine turned off the tap. Neither of them put the paper away.
