Cass is six hundred short, and Arizona closes a water window
By eight-thirty, Cass’s overdue rent has become known to June and Milo: he needs six hundred, and June cannot lend it. She asks Milo not to tell Teo; Milo refuses to make that promise. Cass’s door remains shut, the coffee goes unopened, and the house acquires a problem no one has agreed to share.
Farther south, Phoenix suspends public access to a lower-basin Colorado gauge feed ahead of allocation talks. Denver calls the move theatrical; on the flats, it mostly means that summer water forecasts now come with a little more uncertainty. The city’s wider water argument arrives here as another narrowed margin.
Denver will also leave Mara Villegas’s bindery tables open, untouched, at Sunday’s memorial, with local binders invited to work nearby. Linen rag stock is already moving. Nobody at the warehouse makes art today.

The Denver Public Library and Villegas’s small press announced a Sunday memorial in which her bindery tables will be left set as she used them: thread, bone folders, damaged type, and the unfinished signatures of her final edition. Visitors may handle nothing, but local binders have been invited to sit nearby and work.
The gesture is already drawing more attention than the press expected. A few independent paper suppliers reported a modest rush on linen rag stock by afternoon.

At eight-thirty, Milo stood at the long kitchen counter stripping the paper sleeve off a rationed coffee brick with a thumbnail. The window over the sink was fogged at the corners. June came in wearing her coat, though the building had begun to warm, and watched the kettle fail to boil for a full minute.
“Cass asked me for six hundred,” she said. “He’s short on rent.” Milo looked up. June had both hands flat on the counter, as if she had put them there to stop them doing something else. “I said no. I don’t have it. Don’t tell Teo.”
Milo set the coffee sleeve down beside the kettle. “Why me?” June’s mouth tightened. “Because you know things and then act like they’re materials.” They nodded once, accepting the hit. “That isn’t an answer.” She looked toward the hallway, where Cass’s door stayed shut. “He said he’d sort it.”
“You cannot tell Teo,” June said again. Milo folded the empty sleeve into a narrow square. “I can’t promise that because you asked me after you already decided I was safe to use.” June stared at them, then turned off the kettle before it had boiled. She left the coffee unopened on the counter and went upstairs without saying whether she wanted the draft anymore.
